Aaaaahhhh. Sorry for the lack of posts lately :( Between a multitude of projects, house hunting (shoot me), and my camera biting the dust… keeping my head above water this past week has been a liiitttttllleee difficult.
A little work-related road trip with my babe.
Anyhow, I like being busy. If I’m not busy, I’m bored… and I don’t do bored. Good things come to those who hustle… riiiight?!?
Yum x a million!!
So this week is all about catching my breath, getting back on the road to wellness, aka some major detoxification, hot yoga all day e’ry day, and a fully raw diet, and trying to squeeze in a little ‘me’ time. I’ll keep you guys posted ;)
Sipping on some delish detox water…
So… what do you guys do when you need to rest-up and recharge??
I mean… how often do you see somebody bite into a juicy apple… on the daily. But a pear? Never.
I don’t get it. I’ll admit… Pears didn’t used to cross my mind all that often until they were falling off of my sister’s pear tree by the bucket full ( who knew ) and I started eating them like cray.
Now I incorporate pears into my daily green juice… and when i start to chop that baby up I no longer want to juice it… I want to eat it. This got me thinking a lot about pears ( #deepthoughts ). Why are they so delish… and why do they do a body good?
So here’s the deal… pears are high in anti-oxidants and full of anti-inflammatory nutrients such as Vitamin E and Omega 3 Fatty Acids. They are also the second highest source of flavanols among ALL fruits and veggies.
An increased consumption of pears has been linked to a decrease in many chronic illnesses including heart disease and type II Diabetes. Furthermore, pears have been linked to a decreased cancer risk! Pears are also high in fiber, great for digestion, and contain lutein and beta-carotene with are stellar for your eye health.
That being said… a-pear-ently , pears are like, really, really good for you! Woohoo!
As a rule of thumb I typically say… the hotter, the better!I No, I’m not one of those people that carries around a bottle of Tapatio in her purse ( though I’ll admit I used to be ), but I’m not gonna pretend I haven’t pulled out a shaker of cayenne pepper a time or two… or ten. I definitely prefer things on the spicy side… esp my drinks! So, when it comes to heat, I say… bring it!
I like to drink a TON of water. Like, a ton. Good luck finding me without my favorite sippy cup in hand. I mean, we all know it’s pretty much the best thing you can do for your body, but regular old H2O can be SUCH a bore!! Like, Snoozefest 2014. I like to mix it up so that I’m sure to get in plenty of liquids, yet don’t die of boredom.
My bevies of choice, you ask…? I have two! The first is water with a splash of lemon and a little bit LOT of cayenne pepper mixed in. It’s seriously such a tasty treat and packs some serious health benies. Number two is iced green tea, a splash of lemon, a couple drops of stevia extract, and a generous sprinkle of cayenne ← sooooooooo yum!!
So… why should you incorporate cayenne into your diet. First and foremost, it’s freaking delish, but even more importantly it can majorly amp up your health game. Cayenne pepper contains hefty amounts of vitamins A, E, C, K, and B6. If that’s not convincing enough, check out some of its other insane benefits…
So drink up and spill… what’s your healthy drink of choice?
So, we’re all into starting new, feeling fresh, getting healthy, bla bla bla… but once that magical feeling of a brand new year starts to wear of this can be easier said than done… right?
In my opinion it’s all about finding little things that a ) you enjoy, b ) make you feel better, and c ) bring you one step closer to your health and fitness goals.
I must have been a pretty good girl this year, cuz Santa brought me a Vitamix for Christmas. Woohoo. Seriously… best. present. EVER. I have pretty much been juicing, blending, and pulverizing anything and everything I can get my hands on for the past week.
I’m so excited to bring you my favorite new recipes and I’m starting off with my ultimate fave ( and the way I like to start each day )… the Glowing Green Juice. I’m definitely a lover of juice… esp. green juice, but holy shiz… this seriously blows everything else out of the water. Being able to make my own, fresh juice is making me feel like a kid on Christmas every. single. day.
My girl Lauryn was ranting and raving about Kimberly Snyder’s book “The Beauty Detox Foods”. She highly highly recommended it to me so I did what I do best… ran to the store and bought it! She was right ( thx L, xo ). This book is AMAZE! It’s filled with sooooooooo much quality information and I really agree with her philosophy. Also, the back is filled with bomb-ass recipes, including the Glowing Green Juice. So, here it is!
I like to use water, spinach, romaine, celery, one apple, one pear, a splash of lemon, a few ice cubes, and a table spoon of chlorella ← more on that later.
P.S. This recipe will make enough for a few servings of juice. I like to store my leftovers in cute little glass bottles so that I can grab and go, or share with my friends and fam!
If I want it a little creamier I will add a banana. Chia seeds make a nice addition too. If I’m treating myself post-workout, I’ll add some Perfect Fit Protein. Yum. So delish!
This juice is SO refreshing, SO satisfying, and no joke, after a week of sipping it on the daily my skin is seriously glowing.
A total bonus…? Making fresh, healthy food for my pup & my nephew. Their current fave is a puree of spinach, carrot, and blueberries. Mmmmm. Stay tuned for more of my favorite, healthy Vitamix recipes.
Remember the good ol’ days when you could go to the movies, eat a box of sour patch kids, and not worry about them going straight to your a**? Yep, well… those days are over.
What they say is true… they’re sour on the outside… but not so sweet inside!! One look at the ingredients ( the first being sugar ) and the nasty food dyes which have been shown to trigger migraines, hyperactivity, and a number of other undesirable effects…. and you may want to think twice before tasting this rainbow.
Not to fear… I have found a beyond amazing replacement to satisfy your sweet tooth. These bad boys are completely natural, organic, and packed with antioxidants, bioflavonoids, and vitamins. I’m talking about Goldenberries and yes, you can thank me later.
These superfruits are also referred to as “Inkan Gold”. They are sweet, tart, and freaking delish. They provide a healthy dose of dietary fiber, pectin, protein and they are quickly becoming one of my favorite snacks.
Next time you’re craving a sweet and sour treat say sayonara to Sour Patch Kids and hellooooooo to Goldenberries.
[I have been waiting to share my gluten free story with all of you. I always like to keep it fun, fresh, and fashionable here on the blog; but let’s get real… sometimes life throws you a curve ball. Here is mine.]
Most of my readers know that I am strictly gluten free… but very few know why. It’s not for fun, it’s not to be trendy, and it’s certainly not out of convenience. I am gluten free so that I can thrive, survive, and enjoy life.
Many many years ago I was incredibly ill. The cause was unknown, but as time went by I could hardly function. I was in and out of the hospital, was dropped from most of my classes as my attendance was less than stellar, and lost the majority of my friends. When you are 21 going on 80 you’re not exactly a hoot to be around. I felt terrible the majority of the time, couldn’t go out and party, alcohol was a definite no-no in my condition, and I truly felt like my life was slipping away. I moved back home as I needed lots of physical and emotional support. [My fam is the best BTW!]
I saw doctor after doctor, specialist after specialist, and underwent test after test. Taking care of me and running around from appointment to appointment became a full time job for my family [esp the Mama]. I was diagnosed with a myriad of illnesses, was prescribed a ridiculous amount of medications from anti-seizure meds to anti-depressants [at one point I was popping 30+ pills a day], and overall I continued to feel worse and worse. I looked awful, felt awful, and all in all things were pretty freaking awful.
I had kind of resigned myself to the fact that this would be how my life would play out. Sick, tired, and constantly in pain. It wasn’t until years later that one of my doctors recommend that I go gluten free. I underwent blood and saliva tests that showed a definite gluten sensitivity. He told me to go strictly g-free for a solid six weeks and see how I feel. Let me say, I was sold in way less than six weeks.
After two weeks I started feeling alive again. I was less achy, experienced less joint pain, had more energy, and could think more clearly. The longer I avoided gluten, the better I felt. It was as if my entire system had gotten a re-boot.
I became a gluten guru… reading EVERYTHING there was to read on gluten and a gluten free lifestyle. I can now look at an ingredient list and in about .85 seconds tell you if it contains gluten. Gluten is a sneaky little devil and can take on so many forms. Just because you don’t see wheat, barley, rye, or oats in the ingredients does NOT mean the product is gluten free. Also, beware of labels saying “free of gluten” or “wheat free”. They are marketing ploys. Only trust the official GF stamp and your own good sense.
I am now 100% gluten free [and have been for quite some time]. This includes everything that goes into or onto my body [yes… makeup, shampoo, lotions, etc. can have the same nasty effect on me]. I am never tempted to “cheat”. Nothing in the world could possibly taste that good… and to be honest, I don’t miss a thing. Actually, I do miss one thing: Bonnie Bell Lip Smackers. My favorite chapstick since the age of 3. They are so amazing and so not g-free :( [Wheat germ oil is one of the main ingredients. Wah wah.] Ok, so other than the Lip Smackers… I don’t miss a thing.
Since I have gone gluten free I have been “poisoned” a handful of times. Even if you are completely diligent in your g-free efforts, it can still happen. Let’s face it. You’ve got to live your life. This means eating out at restaurants or at other people’s homes. Not everyone can be as careful as you… and honestly, you can’t expect them to. Plus there’s always the matter of cross contamination. I would say I prepare 90% of the food that I put into my body, and with the other 10% I just have to pray for the best.
I will know if I got “glutened” within hours… and the negative effects typically last 3 – 5 weeks. I’m not gonna lie, it totally sucks. The nausea, headaches, brain fog, joint pain, body aches, tenderness to the touch, and fatigue all come rushing back. I spent one Christmas “glutened” and couldn’t even be hugged by my family members as it was so painful to be touched. My whole body felt like a bruise. And forget about cute clothes. Times like these call for the baggiest of baggy sweats as waistbands and bras become the stuff of nightmares. I haven’t found a great way to fight this quite yet… but I’m working on it. Aloe vera juice is very cleansing and the last time I got “glutened” I chugged aloe like it was my job. I only felt terrible for about two weeks that time instead of the usual 3-5.
I feel that it is only appropriate to share my GF journey with my dedicated little ‘doos [that’s you]. I want you all to know that every recipe I post and every product I recommend is totally g-free and safe [in my experience]. I also want you to know that if you have questions about going gluten free or are experiencing road bumps on your own GF journey I want you to talk to me. Trust me, I’ve been through it all and nothing would make me happier than helping out a g-free friend in need.
Sooo… that may seem like an oxymoron, but I want to give you the low down on the Mykos 3 day cleanse. To make a long story short… I LOVED it!!! Here’s why…
First of all, let’s talk about the juices. I started each day with 16 oz of lemon water. This totally cleans out your system and preps you for the day. Throughout the day I drank 6: a green juice, spicy lemonade, nut milk (<– yum), alive tea, a second green juice, and last but not least a pink cooler. All of the bevies were delicious in their own special way. If you like green juice, you will love this one. It was super tasty and packed a real nutrient punch. The spicy lemonade was great. I like things spicy, so the cayenne pepper was a total bonus! The nut milk… where do I begin? I’m a huge fan of almond milk (it’s the only kind of “milk” I ever use), but this nut milk was seriously out of this world. I don’t know what it was that made it so special, but I’ve gotta say that breaking up all of the fruity-ness with this creamy treat in the afternoon really made my day! The alive tea was minty and refreshing, and the pink cooler was sooooo delish. It was infused with fruity goodness and I definitely ate the blueberries floating at the bottom (<– solids… score)!!
For me, the first day was the toughest. I am prone to headaches as it is and I always get them when I am cleansing. Today was no different. I had a headache pretty much all day… not a terrible one, not a turn off the lights and don’t talk to me headache, just a dull, nagging headache. I didn’t take anything for it. Popping an Advil during a cleanse just seems wrong. I knew it would pass, and it did! Other than that minor annoyance, day one was smooth sailin’! I drank tons of water throughout the day and for “dinner” I had a small bowl of lettuce with 1/3 of a green pepper, 1/3 of a persian cucumber and some lemon juice squeezed on top (I ate this all 3 nights btw). Greens are allowed on this cleanse… hence my green dinner. Kermit would be proud.
Day two was a breeze. I drank my lemon water and my juices as per usual. I felt great and I was already down 3 lbs. I don’t necessarily think that weighing yourself on the daily is a healthy habit, however, I think that when you’re on a cleanse it is super motivating. Just keep in mind that part of your weight loss is water weight.
Day three! Day three is always something to celebrate if you ask me. The finish line is in sight and you start to feel a sense of accomplishment. Day three’s menu was the same as days one and two with one exception. The second green juice was replaced with a second spicy lemonade. This gave me an extra cleansing kick! I may have been a bit to active on day three which led to a little dizziness and light headedness in the afternoon. I knew that it was no big deal, I had just expended way more calories than I had been consuming. A handful of raw almonds did the trick and I was feeling back to normal in no time. Raw nuts are permitted on the cleanse if you feel like you are totally famished, but I didn’t need them up until this point. I love almonds and I knew that if I had started them earlier in the cleanse I would be way too tempted to snack. The rest of the evening was easy peasy. I kicked back with a Lifetime movie (<– my guiltiest pleasure) and thought about the healthy foods I would eat on day four!
It’s so important not to undo what you have just done. Post cleanse you should focus on small, nutrient dense, super healthy meals and tons of water. I mean, your stomach has shrunk and your bladder has grown so you might as well take advantage of it! I started my first post cleanse day with my lemon water (this will now be how I start each and every day). I made a smoothie with almond milk, berries, and some Perfect Fit protein powder for breakfast and it was so tasty! I continued my day with small, healthy snacks like nuts, fruits, and veggies. I found that I was getting full really easily and drinking water like a fiend. It was awesome. I think it’s important to choose something other than food to reward yourself for finishing the cleanse. I rewarded myself with some new running shoes followed by an awesome workout! All in all, I absolutely loved this cleanse! I lost 6 lbs in total, but more importantly I feel great! I am bursting with energy, my head feels clear, my skin looks and feels amazing, and I am super motivated to keep up the good work!
Here are the deets on Mykos… They are a locally based San Diego company that makes delicious juice! Their website is not up and running quite yet, but here is the link. You can input your information and receive an email just as soon as it is. In the meantime, visit their Facebook page!
K… so I’m kind of obsessed with coconut. Coconut oil, coconut body butter, coconut perfume, coconut milk, even straight up coconut. Despite all of these amazing coconut-y products, I gotta say that for me coconut water takes the cake. It is my absolute favorite bevie and I always have it on me. I pretty much thought that coconut water was the most amazing thing in the whole wide world… until today. Apparently those coconuts have really upped their game and I was completely blown away when I tasted Zico’s chocolate coconut water for the first time today!! OHMYGOSH! It seriously tastes like chocolate milk only way better, lighter, more refreshing, and loaded with all sorts of good for you stuff [[like electrolytes and potassium]]. Coconut water contains antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It also serves as a cure all for pretty much whatever ails you… dehydration, sluggishness, intestinal problems, skin issues, the list goes on. It wasn’t until today that I discovered it’s also a cure for a chocolate craving. Yup! One cup contains only 70 calories and is super low in sugar, making it a great choice to satisfy that sweet tooth and gain some much needed nutrition while you’re at it. So go ahead… give it a try. I promise it won’t disappoint!
One of my absolute favorite must-haves of the moment is the Vega One protein powder. I got completely hooked on this stuff while doing a recent cleanse… now I just don’t feel right without my morning shake. This stuff not only tastes great [great texture and no chalky after taste], but it is packed with some serious good-for-you goods. Between the protein, fiber, probiotics, greens, omega-3s and antioxidants it provides 50% of the recommended daily intake [RDI] of vitamins and minerals plusit’s totally allergen friendly! It is plant based, completely vegan, and gluten free… yay! It’s available at Whole Foods and many health food stores. I have both the chocolate and vanilla flavors. Each morning I mix a scoop with some frozen berries, unsweetenedvanilla almond milkor coconut milk, and a half a banana or some frozen mango… mmmmm! If health is one of your goals for the new year… this is a great thing to incorporate into your daily routine. So mix it up… drink it down… and cheers to a happy and healthy you!
