News flash: I have a new obsession, or rather an old obsession coming to me in a new form…

Anyone who knows me knows that I LOVE coconut. Anything coconut. Everything coconut. Coconut milk, coconut water, coconut flakes, shredded coconut, coconut butter, coconut oil (I literally bathe in it), coconut palm sugar, plain old coconut. Basically, if you’re a coconut in any form… you are totally welcome into my life.

So, what’s this new obsession? Dang Coconut Chips. Yep, toasted, crunchy, crispy, salty, sweet coconut chips. I’ve tried other coconut chips… but these ones undoubtedly take the cake. They have the perfect taste and the perfect, crunchy consistency. I picked up a bag of these bad boys at Whole Foods the other day and it was love at first site bite. I literally died. Maybe not literally, but pretty freaking close. These are hands down the best things I have ever tasted. Yes, you can incorporate these into your favorite recipes or use them as garnishes but I’m perfectly content eating them straight from the bag.

Furthermore, coconut is totally AMAZING for you. They are rich in healthy fat and lauric acid. Coconut boosts energy, increases immunity, regulates blood sugar, nourishes the thyroid, and can help cut down on belly fat. ALl of that and they are freaking delish. These coconut chips are gluten free, dairy free, vegan, all natural, non GMO, and all of that other good stuff!! Oh ya, and they contain only three ingredients… no preservatives or nasty chemicals. Woo-hoo!

Why Cayenne Pepper Rocks My World…

As a rule of thumb I typically say… the hotter, the better!I No, I’m not one of those people that carries around a bottle of Tapatio in her purse ( though I’ll admit I used to be ), but I’m not gonna pretend I haven’t pulled out a shaker of cayenne pepper a time or two… or ten. I definitely prefer things on the spicy side… esp my drinks! So, when it comes to heat, I say… bring it!

I like to drink a TON of water. Like, a ton. Good luck finding me without my favorite sippy cup in hand. I mean, we all know it’s pretty much the best thing you can do for your body, but regular old H2O can be SUCH a bore!! Like, Snoozefest 2014. I like to mix it up so that I’m sure to get in plenty of liquids, yet don’t die of boredom.

My bevies of choice, you ask…? I have two! The first is water with a splash of lemon and a little bit LOT of cayenne pepper mixed in. It’s seriously such a tasty treat and packs some serious health benies. Number two is iced green tea, a splash of lemon, a couple drops of stevia extract, and a generous sprinkle of cayenne ← sooooooooo yum!!

So… why should you incorporate cayenne into your diet. First and foremost, it’s freaking delish, but even more importantly it can majorly amp up your health game. HIIT Me Baby

You all know I loooooveeee a good run, and try to get one in on the daily. It clears my head, helps me manage my stress, and sometimes it just feels so good to SWEAT. However, I do think that cardio can be highly overrated… esp. when it comes to the ladies.

Our bodies CRAVE change… so you may actually be doing yourself a disservice by jogging the same old route, practicing the same yoga routine, or hopping on the elliptical daily. It may feel good, and yes, it’s obviously better than sitting on you a**… but your bod is saying “yawn, yawn, yawn”… been there, done that!

So, let’s talk about HIIT-ing the gym to work smarter, not harder ← well, maybe a little bit harder. I’m talking about HIIT – High Intensity Interval Training. Here’s why it’s the bee’s knees…

My fave HIIT workouts of the moment are the “HIIT The Beach” portions of the Tone It Up Beach Babe DVDs… yep, volumes 1 & 2. I’m seriously obsessed. They are about 40 minutes each and inspire a serious sweat sesh. They mix up HIIT segments with toning segments so you end up with a full body workout. They are perfect to pair with more targeted toning routines, a little cardio, or on their own if you’re short on time.

Snack-Time Saviors: Snip Chips

You probably know by now that Wonderfully Raw makes some of my absolute favorite snacks, so when I received a little package from them I was beyond stoked to find some of my go-to faves and discover some new ones!!

Let me just say that Snip Chips seriously just took my snacking game to the next level! ← OMG. They’re made of parsnips, coconut ← my fav food in the world , and other delicious, nutritious ingreds. I’m pretty sure I have never eaten a parsnip ( until now ). I’m not even sure what one looks like. I will say, however, that they are super delish.

Parsnips are high in dietary fiber, folate, omega 3s, potassium, and vitamins C, E, and K. Coconut is my favorite source of healthy fat. It is super heart healthy, high in fiber, and has a low Glycemic Index, keeping your blood sugar stable and reducing cravings for other, not so healthy treats.

Sweat In Style

New year, new you workout gear. If you’re human, you probably made a resolution, promise to yourself, deal with the devil ( whatever you want to call it ) to eat right and work out this year… am I right? I explained here why I’m not into resolutions, however, I am into taking care of yourself and your bod… soooooo… I say start where all good things do, in your closet.

If you look the part, you’re going to act the part. I may be fashion obsessed, but I probably spend 80% of my life in workout wear. Why? Because a ) it’s comfy, b ) it can be cute, and c ) wear it = do it. Simple as that. Here are some of my favorite pieces to inspire a good old sweat sesh.

+ [ VSX Sports Bra ] $50 : When it comes to bras, Victoria’s Secret obviously knows what’s up. This is one of my faves. Cute, comfy, and super supportive.

+ [ Beats by Dre Studio Headphones ] $299 : I absolutely cannot work out with earbuds. Sry. Hate it. IDK why. I’m all about big old headphones… the bigger, the better. Bonus… they keep your ears warm when you’re running out in the cold.

+ [ VS Pink Hoodie ] $33 : Gotta keep those muscles nice and warm post workout. VS hoodies are just the softest, hands down. Plus they’re light weight and the bright colors are super motivating :)

+ [ LuLu Lemon Happy Hatha Hour Bag ] $118 :  The key to actually going to the gym is preparation. Pull a Mary Poppins and keep your bag packed up with everything you could possibly need including your workout gear, toiletries, makeup bag, a little protein packed snack, whatever gets you through the day and to the gym.

+ [ Nike Free Tr 4 ] $140 : I LOVE Nike Frees. They are sooooo comfy, lightweight, and prob the best looking sneak out there IMHO.

+ [ Tye Dye Twistbands ] $27 : There is nothing worse than having a face full of hair when you’re trying to perfect your downward dog. Tie it up with a Twistband. Functional & fashionable.

+ [ Life Factory Water Bottle ] $23 : I literally don’t leave home without my Life Factory water bottle. Cute, cool, and BPA free.

+ [ VS Pink Ponte Leggings ] $30 : Finding a good pair of leggings is like finding a needle in a freaking haystack. Nothing worse than finishing up a good stretch sesh to find your too thin leggings are just a little on the see through side. #oops. These bad boys are, not too thin, not too thick, just right.

+ [ Nope Muscle Tee ] $14 : I like to keep it fresh in a good old muscle tee. Keeps you cool and covered up all in one.

Remember the good ol’ days when you could go to the movies, eat a box of sour patch kids, and not worry about them going straight to your a**? Yep, well… those days are over.

What they say is true… they’re sour on the outside… but not so sweet inside!! One look at the ingredients ( the first being sugar ) and the nasty food dyes which have been shown to trigger migraines, hyperactivity, and a number of other undesirable effects…. and you may want to think twice before tasting this rainbow.

Snack-time Saviors: Brussel Bytes

If there’s one thing I love, it’s snacking. What I don’t love is stuffing myself full of empty cals. I’m always looking for healthy snacks that not only satisfy my munchies, but actually do something good for my body! Some of my favs include celery and raw almond butter, jicama with lime, raw sprouted almonds, Green Chia Kombucha, coconut H2O, and my new fav… Brussel Bytes!

These things are stupid good! My nutritionist introduced me to them and I’m so so happy she did! They are raw, organic, gluten free, and freaking delicious. They’re made of brussel sprouts ← duh, pumpkin seeds, coconut, and deliciousness. I know… who knew coconut + brussel sprouts = the tastiest treat ever?!?

Stuff It!

Are you guys wearing socks…? Cuz I’m about to knock them off with the most insanely delicious stuffing you have ever stuffed your face with! I’m not kidding. This stuffing is so good it literally brings a tear to my eye. The best part…? It’s totally G-Free and Paleo friendly too :)

Growing up I was always the queen of stuffing ( well, maybe self proclaimed queen )… nonetheless, I was queen. Stuffing has always been my jam. It’s the part of the holiday menu I have always been in charge of, and obvi my favorite part of the meal. Finding out I was allergic to gluten kind of threw a monkey wrench into the whole queen of stuffing thing. I experimented with G-Free stuffing recipes for years to no avail. It just never came out right… thus, I was dethroned… until now!!!

This year I came up with the most incredible gluten free stuffing. It’s super simple to make and I swear your Turkey Day guests will be begging you for the recipe. I tried it out last weekend, as I’m a firm believer in experimenting with new recipes prior to the day of an event. This can save you from major stress, and major disasters… totes worth it. Anyhooooo, it was love at first bite, and my family could not believe how light, fluffy, and delicious it was. Forget about letting your nasty, gluten free bread dry out over night, etc. etc. We’re making this from scratch.

Tip: If you live in the real world and don’t have hours to spend chopping away in the kitch, or don’t want to ruin your holiday makeup crying over Mr. Onion you can pick up an organic, already chopped mixture of onion, celery, sage, and parsley in the produce section of Whole Foods. What a life saver!

The steps:

– Sauté ghee, onion, celery, parsley, and sage over medium heat for about 5 minutes.

– Add your sprig of chopped rosemary and pecans to your pan for the last 2 minutes.

– In a seperate bow, combine your dry ingredients – almond flour, coconut flour, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg.

– Now stir in your wet ingredients: eggs and chicken broth.

– Once your mixture is done sauteing, add it to your wet and dry ingredients and combine well.

– You will be left with a crumbly dough… leave it this way if you like your stuffing nice and fluffy. If you prefer a more dense stuffing, feel free to pack it more tightly.

Pour your stuffing mixture into a Pyrex, Le Creuset, or some type of oven safe dish and bake at 350 for 35 – 40 minutes.

Real vs. Steal: Coated Denim

So… coated denim is kind of my thing as of late! It gives you the best of both worlds IMHO. I love the look of leather, but hate feeling like I’m stuck in a sauna. Ick. Coated denim lets you feel like you’re wearing super comfy jeans, but with a rocker edge that’s right up my alley.

Why You Should Freeze Your Nuts

Ok… I know what you’re thinking. Let’s get our minds out of the gutter… I’m talking almonds (my fav), cashews, and any other nuts of your liking. You know, nuts. Those little gems that provide protection against diabetes, heart disease, and cancer!

First of all, try to buy raw, sprouted nuts <– they’re available in the raw section of your local Whole Foods or health food store. If you can’t find them already sprouted you can sprout your own by soaking them overnight.

Why should you sprout your nuts? Raw almonds naturally contain tannic acid. This enzyme inhibitor protects them from sunlight, moisture, etc. It can also make them extremely difficult to digest properly and inhibits your body from absorbing all of those awesome nutrients such as protein, fiber, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids and lipase (an enzyme which digests fat) <– hello, who doesn’t like the sound of that?

Why you should never roast your nuts… like ever! Roasting nuts destroys many of their nutrients and releases free radicals. It also destroys their naturally delish flavor, so nasty additives such as MSG and Maltodextrin ( which are both neurotoxins BTW ) are typically added to replace the lost flavor ( YUCK )!!

So let’s get to the point… why should you freeze your nuts? Do you ever notice how when nuts are left at room temperature for awhile the taste and texture get a little funky? NBD… that’s just your nuts going RANCID! Nuts are composed of delicate, healthy fats <– ya know… the kinds that actually help you to lose weight! These fats are somewhat volatile and do NOT do well at room temp.

In short… freezing your nuts will keep them fresher, healthier, and tastier for much longer… plus, taking about your frozen nuts may just be the conversation starter you’ve been waiting for ;)
